On Military Parkway, in the heart of East Dallas, one family's love of the sweet science became a Dallas institution. Jesse A. Montoya Sr. built this gym on Golden Gloves grit, his son Michael carried the name to the U.S. Olympic trials, and today the next generation of Montoyas still wraps hands, rings the bell and sends Team Montoya into the tournament. No mirrors, no gimmicks — just heavy bags, a ring that has seen a lifetime of rounds, and a family that has kept Dallas boxing proud since 1957.

The Montoya Story

One family, one gym, almost seventy years of Dallas boxing. Here's how the history runs.

  1. 1957

    The Montoyas start boxing

Jesse A. Montoya Sr. laces up the family's first gloves. He becomes a pillar of amateur boxing across Dallas–Fort Worth and builds the gym that still carries his name.

  2. 1984

A son at the Olympic trials

Michael A. Montoya follows his father into the ring, wins Golden Gloves like he did, and earns an invitation to the 1984 U.S. Olympic trials.

  3. Fight camps

Champions make camp in East Dallas

Greatness has put in the work inside these ropes. Evander Holyfield prepared here for his last professional fight, and Terence Crawford made Montoya home for a training camp of his own. In 2024, Mike Tyson took his final sparring rounds in this ring before facing Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium. Alongside many others, they became part of a Dallas boxing tradition built on hard rounds, quiet discipline and a family’s lifelong love of the sport.

  4. Today

    Still family, still East Dallas

Michael A. and Anthony Montoya run the gym. The youth program is a 501(c)(3) with scholarships that cover dues, registration and equipment, and Team Montoya still fights the Golden Gloves.

On screen. Netflix, The Undercard and Deion Sanders' reality show have all filmed inside the gym.
